A Girl's Days of Bleeding Interspersed by Days of Purity

Examples:

1. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 2 days and does not see blood for 1 day and bleeds for 2 days and thereafter remains pure for 25 days, 1 day of purity in between is treated as if blood flowed on that day as well. That is, she is considered to have menstruated for 5 days in total. The duration of her menstrual period is counted as 5 days.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she must discontinue salat. When the bleeding stops on the 3rd day, she must resume salat by performing a wudu (ablution). There is no need for ghusl (purificatory bath). When the bleeding restarts on the 4th day, she must discontinue salat again but resume it by performing a ghusl on the 6th day when the bleeding stops.

2. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 3 days and does not see blood for 2 days and bleeds for 1 day and does not see blood for 1 day and bleeds for 1 day and does see blood for 1 day and bleeds for 1 day and thereafter remains pure for 20 days, 4 days of purity are treated as if blood flowed during these days as well. That is, she is considered to have menstruated for 10 days in total. The duration of her menstrual period is counted as 10 days.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she discontinues salat. When the bleeding stops on the 4th day, she must resume salat by taking a ghusl. When the bleeding restarts on the 6th day, she discontinues salat again. She resumes it on the 7th day by taking a ghusl when the bleeding stops. On seeing the blood on the 8th day, she discontinues salat again and resumes it by taking a ghusl on the 9th day when the bleeding ends. She, seeing blood on the 10th day, discontinues salat and resumes it on the 11th day by performing a ghusl when it ends. Thereafter she does not have to take a ghusl, even if there is bleeding, but continues to perform salat by doing only wudu because she has completed 10 days (which is the maximum duration for menstruation).

3. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 4 days and does not see blood for 3 days and bleeds for 1 day and thereafter remains pure for 22 days, 3 days of purity in between are treated as if blood flowed during these days as well. She is considered to have menstruated for 8 days in total. The duration of her menstrual period is counted as 8 days.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she must discontinue salat. When the bleeding stops on the 5th day, she takes a ghusl and resumes salat. She discontinues it when the blood is released on the 8th day. She takes a ghusl again on the 9th day when the bleeding stops.

4. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 1 day and does not see blood for 8 days and bleeds for 1 day and thereafter remains pure for 20 days, 8 days of purity in between are treated as if blood flowed during these days as well. That is, she is considered to have menstruated for 10 days. The duration of her menstrual period is counted as 10 days.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she must discontinue salat. She must resume salat by doing only wudu, not ghusl, when the bleeding stops on the 2nd day. She again discontinues salat when blood is released on the 10th day. She resumes salat by taking a ghusl on the 11th day when the bleeding stops.

5. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 1 day and does not see blood for 9 days and bleeds for 1 day and thereafter remains pure for 19 days, none of the days of bleeding are counted as menstruation. The bleeding she experienced during 2 days is considered istihada (non-menstrual bleeding) because the days of purity preceding the bleeding after the 10th day are not considered to be the days of menstruation.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she discontinues salat. She resumes it by performing wudu, not ghusl, on the 2nd day when the bleeding stops. She continues to perform salat even though she sees blood on the 11th day because it is certain that this blood is istihada as the bleeding has exceeded 10 days.

6. If a girl, for the first time in her life, bleeds for 1 day and does not see blood for 8 days and bleeds for 2 days and thereafter remains pure for 19 days, 8 days of purity in between are treated as if blood flowed during these days as well. That is, she is considered to have menstruated for 10 days. Day 11 is considered istihada. The duration of her menstrual period is counted as 10 days.

EXPLANATION:

On seeing blood, she discontinues salat. She resumes it by performing only wudu, not ghusl, on the 2nd day when the bleeding stops. She discontinues it on the 10th day when the bleeding restarts. The blood released on the 11th day is istihada, so she must resume salat by taking a ghusl.
