Examples for Bleeding That Exceeds and Does Not Exceed 10 Days

1. A woman’s habit is 22 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 20 days and then sees bleeding for 8 days, the duration of bleeding becomes her new habit of menstruation because bleeding has not exceeded 10 days. The duration of her menstruation has increased to 8 days, and the duration of her purity has decreased to 20 days. Because the days of bleeding have not exceeded 10 days, it is not necessary to refer to her previous menstrual period to ascertain whether these days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period or not.

2.
A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 7 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 19 days and then sees bleeding for 11 days, it means that there is istihada (non-menstrual bleeding; bleeding other than menses and postnatal bleeding) as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether the days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because 2 days of bleeding [not 3 days at least] coincide with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit—that is, the first 7 of 11 days of bleeding—is counted as menstruation, and the remaining [4] days are counted as istihada. The duration of purity has decreased to 19 days.

3. A woman’s habit is 20 days of purity and 10 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 19 days and then sees bleeding for 12 days, it means that there is istihada as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether her days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because 10 days of bleeding [the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th days] coincide with her previous menstrual period, these 10 days are counted as menstrual bleeding. Day 1 and day 12 are counted as istihada. Neither the duration of purity nor the duration of menstruation changes. The length of her menstruation is still 10 days. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada later on.

4. A woman’s habit is 22 days of purity and 9 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 23 days and then sees bleeding for 7 days, the number of days that she has seen bleeding becomes her new habit of menstruation as bleeding has not exceeded 10 days. That is, the duration of her menstruation has decreased to 7 days, and her purity period has increased to 23 days. She does not have to refer to her previous menstrual period as bleeding has not gone beyond 10 days.

5. A woman’s habit is 25 days of purity and 5 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 26 days and then sees bleeding for 13 days, it means that there is istihada as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether the days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because 4 days of bleeding [the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th days] coincide with her previous menstrual period, these 4 days are counted as menstruation, and the remaining 9 days are counted as istihada. The duration of purity has increased to 26 days, and the duration of menstruation has decreased to 4 days. She can perform ghusl (purificatory bath) and resume salat after day 10, even if there is bleeding, because the days following after day 10 do not coincide with her previous menstrual period; that is, it is certain that these days are istihada. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada later on.

6. A woman’s habit is 27 days of purity and 6 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 16 days and then sees bleeding for 11 days, it means that there is istihada as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether the days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because no day coincides with her previous menstrual period, the length of her habit—that is, the first 6 of 11 days—is counted as menstrual bleeding, and the remaining days are considered istihada. The duration of purity has decreased to 16 days. She can perform ghusl and resume salat after day 10, even if there is bleeding, because the days following after day 10 do not coincide with her previous menstrual period; that is, it is certain that these days are istihada. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada later on.

7. A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 5 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 22 days and then sees bleeding for 10 days, the days she has seen bleeding are counted as her new habit of menstruation as the bleeding has not exceeded 10 days. In other words, the duration of her menstruation has increased to 10 days while the duration of purity has decreased to 22 days. Because the days of bleeding have not exceeded 10 days, it is not necessary to refer to her previous menstrual period to ascertain whether these days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period or not.

8.
A woman’s habit is 28 days of purity and 5 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 22 days and then sees bleeding for 11 days, it means that there is istihada as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether the days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because 5 days of bleeding [the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th days] coincide with her previous menstrual period, these 5 days are counted as menstruation, and the first 6 days are counted as istihada. Neither the duration of purity nor the duration of menstruation changes. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada later on.

9. A woman’s habit is 26 days of purity and 3 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 23 days and then sees bleeding for 9 days, the days she has seen bleeding are counted as her new habit of menstruation as the bleeding has not exceeded 10 days. In other words, the duration of menstruation has increased to 9 days while the duration of purity has decreased to 23 days. Because the days of bleeding have not exceeded 10 days, it is not necessary to refer to her previous menstrual period to ascertain whether these days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period or not.

10. A woman’s habit is 26 days of purity and 3 days of menstruation. If she, the next time, remains free from menstruation for 22 days and then sees bleeding for 11 days, it means that there is istihada as bleeding has exceeded 10 days. She must refer to her previous menstrual period first to ascertain whether the days of bleeding coincide with her previous menstrual period. Because 3 days of bleeding [the 5th, 6th, 7th days] coincide with her previous menstrual period, these 3 days are counted as menstruation. The first 4 and the last 4 days are counted as istihada. Neither the duration of purity nor the duration of menstruation changes. The duration of her menstruation is still 3 days. She can perform ghusl and resume salat after day 10, even if there is bleeding, because the days following after day 10 do not coincide with her previous menstrual period; that is, it is certain that these days are istihada. She must make up the salats that she missed during the days of istihada later on.
